Housing loans from non-banking financial companies accelerated in September 2026, the Reserve Bank of India said on 6 November. Overall NBFC credit grew 15.4% from a year earlier, up from 13.3% in September 2025. The RBI also reported buoyant expansion in commercial real estate credit. These are lending signals, not home sales or price measures. (Reserve Bank of India release)
Retail loan growth across NBFCs and housing finance companies reached 21.9% year over year, compared with 16.8% a year earlier. The RBI named housing loans, loans against gold and vehicle loans among the segments with accelerated growth. It did not provide a separate housing-loan growth rate in the release summary.
What does the RBI data measure?
The release covers credit reported by major NBFCs and housing finance companies. Its figures are provisional data reported as of 30 September. The RBI says its sample accounts for about 87% of the credit total reported for those lenders in its 2024 to 25 banking report.
The report also says services credit growth moderated to 17.3% from 23% a year earlier. Within services, commercial real estate was a buoyant segment. The release does not give a specific city split or property type breakdown for that statement.
What does it mean for the housing market?
The data show more credit growth flowing through NBFC and housing finance channels. They do not tell us how many homes were sold, whether buyers paid higher prices or where loans were issued. Bank lending is outside this release’s NBFC sector series.
For a separate price measure, BestProp.ai’s coverage of the NHB RESIDEX house price index explains what a city index tracks. Credit growth and a house price index answer different questions.
Did the RBI report a housing-loan growth percentage? The release summary says housing loans accelerated but gives no separate rate.
Does this show home prices rose? The release reports credit deployment, not property prices.
The useful national signal is lending activity in the reporting NBFC sample. The data do not support a forecast for prices or sales. BestProp.ai reviewed the RBI release dated 6 November 2026.
