The short answer
Haryana property owners and occupiers covered by the state’s new property-tax system have a two-month option, starting 1 August 2026, to pay at rates under the 2013 notification. On that calendar, the option runs through 30 September. The Haryana Urban Local Bodies Department says that after the period, payments must follow the new notification.
What Haryana has confirmed
The department’s 18 September release says the new property-tax system and rates took effect on 1 August 2026 under a notification issued on 1 September. During the two-month period from 1 August, owners and occupiers could pay at the earlier 2013 rates. The release describes this as a limited window; it does not say the old schedule continues after September.
The department also addresses two situations that can be easy to mix up. If property tax for financial year 2026–27 has already been paid, the release says the new notification will not affect that payment. Arrears and interest for periods up to FY 2025–26 remain unchanged. The window therefore does not erase earlier dues.
What to check before paying
The press release explains the dates and transition, but it does not calculate an individual property’s bill or list each municipality’s rate by property type. Use the Haryana property-tax portal and the relevant urban local body’s assessment to confirm that a property is covered, what amount is assessed, and which record matches its use and details. Keep the demand, payment receipt and any correction request together.
This is municipal property tax. It is separate from income-tax treatment of rent or ownership of more than one home. BestProp.ai’s two-house ITR explainer covers that different question.
BestProp.ai’s practical read
The useful action is time-bound but narrow: check the local bill and its assessment basis before the old-rate option ends. The state’s release does not say every owner’s bill will rise by the same amount, or state how a specific property compares under both schedules. A deadline is not a substitute for checking the assessment attached to the property.
Does the old-rate period change FY 2025–26 arrears?
No. The department says arrears and interest through FY 2025–26 remain unchanged.
What if FY 2026–27 tax is already paid?
The state says an amount already paid for FY 2026–27 will not be affected by the new notification.
When does the old-rate option end?
The department specifies two months from 1 August 2026, which runs through 30 September on the calendar.
Source and scope
The dates and treatment of paid amounts and arrears come from the Haryana Urban Local Bodies Department release. The state property-tax portal links to local tax services. The release does not provide a property-specific bill calculation; owners need to check the assessment for their municipality and property.
